Left (Before): This person developed a keloid (a scar that continues to grow) after ear cartilage piercing. It started in the inside curve of the ear and grew so large that it was obvious to any observer. Not only are keloid scars unsightly, but they can itch, burn, and be generally uncomfortable. There are many methods to deal with keloids, and they can grow back after removal.

Right (Six weeks after surgical removal): After discussing various treatment options, along with their risks and benefits, this patient elected to proceed with surgical excision and reconstruction of the ear. This is complicated in that the keloid extends all the way through the ear cartilage, meaning it had to be removed on both the front and back, as well as the ear cartilage. So far there is no sign of return of the keloid, but as part of the procedure, the surgical site will be monitored for any sign of regrowth. The patient was very happy to get rid of the large growth and have her normal ear back again!
