Understanding Scar Removal

Numerous procedures have been devised to eliminate scars, but most have been met with little to no success. Cutting out the scars, chemical peels, and dermabrasion all come with complications and can even cause additional scarring and skin pigmentation problems. In the 1990s, lasers such as the carbon dioxide skin laser offered promises of removing all scars; however, even after multiple treatments little to any benefit was realized, and the scarring did not disappear as originally promised.

The need for a successful procedure to eliminate scarring drove Dr. Enzer to research and discover a revolutionary approach that removes scars from the inside out. Through his innovation, Dr. Enzer discovered that the poor success rate of other procedures was due to the fact that the scars reach into the deepest skin and sometimes even down to the underlying subcutaneous fat layer. With this understanding of scar behavior, he developed the FaSuLa concept.

What is FaSuLa Scar Surgery?

FaSuLa stands for Fat Transfer-Subcision-Laser — three mainstay cosmetic procedures that when combined produce extraordinary results. Using these three procedures and other ancillary techniques as needed, Dr. Enzer restores the damaged skin from the bottom up. Before the procedure, each scar is analyzed for size, depth, and shape so that Dr. Enzer can devise the optimal treatment plan for you. The FaSuLa treatment can be described similarly to the steps of building a house:

  • Laying the foundation: Dr. Enzer restores the deepest subcutaneous layer of the skin with fat transfer to remove the scar damage and improve the skin’s contour. Recently we have discovered that there is a high concentration of stem cells in the transferred fat. This has the potential to rejuvenate the damaged skin more than we imagined.
  • Putting up the walls: Next, the middle layer of skin is treated with subcision and dermal grafting.
  • Brushing on a fresh coat of paint: Finally, the top layer of skin is smoothed over and tightened with laser resurfacing.

Who is the Best Candidate for FaSuLa Scar Surgery?

The FaSuLa concept allows Dr. Enzer to treat most patients with deep scarring from acne, chickenpox, and other traumatic events. However, FaSuLa is not right for everyone. Although we strive for your complete satisfaction, there are many scars that can be improved but not completely erased. Some scars cannot be treated at all. Please be assured that Dr. Enzer will do his best to offer you as many options as possible to achieve the results you desire.
