Welcome to our summer newsletter! We have lots of exciting specials and news for you this month, so dive right in for the details.
What’s new with Dr. Enzer
Dr. Enzer and his associates presented their research on Brow Asymmetry and Preferences at a regional meeting of New England physicians in Boston last month. The research found that about 60% of our population carries one brow higher than the other, and this is statistically related to the dominant eye. This has a profound impact for plastic surgeons when planning upper lid surgery, as the side with the lower brow appears to have more skin than the other side. In fact, with both eyebrows in the relaxed position, the amount of skin is the same! Dr. Enzer is proud to make these types of research contributions to the field of cosmetic surgery, and is honored to be recognized by his peers.

How to be a sunscreen expert
Nothing ruins a perfect summer day more than a sunburn. Not only is a sunburn painful, but getting just one sunburn dramatically increases your risk for skin cancer. Dr. Enzer sees hundreds of skin cancer patients a year, and knows how important sunscreen is as a defense against the sun’s harmful rays. Here are our tips on using sunscreen to outsmart the sun:
Know how to shop for a sunscreen.
Ingredients are everything. Look for sunscreens with zinc or titanium dioxide as its main ingredients. Zinc and titanium dioxide are the most effective at blocking both UVA and UVB rays. Choosing a sunscreen with quality ingredients that block both UVA and UVB rays is actually more important than choosing one with a high sun protection factor (SPF) rating.
It’s also smart to keep different kinds of sunscreen in your repertoire for different occasions. Do you need a daily sunscreen to wear under makeup? Are you looking for a sunscreen that will keep up with you for a day on the beach? What about a sunscreen for breakout-prone skin? Sunscreen isn’t meant to be “one size fits all” so choose two or three sunscreens that will best suit your lifestyle.
Apply sunscreen early, regularly, and generously.
Once you’ve purchased your sunscreen, you need to know how to use it. If you’re headed out for a day of fun in the sun, apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. Don’t forget the hard-to-reach spots, like your ears, feet, back of your legs, and bald spot (if you have one). Once you’re outside, you should reapply at least every two hours, even if your sunscreen has a high SPF rating. You should reapply more often if you’re in the water, towel drying, or sweating a lot.
Don’t skimp on the sunscreen. Most people only apply a quarter to two-thirds of the amount they should, which means they only get a fraction of the protection they need. To reap the full benefits of the sunscreen’s SPF rating, the FDA advises to apply one ounce (e.g. a full shot glass) to your entire body. It’s more than you think!
Don’t rely on sunscreen alone.
There is no sunscreen on the market that will provide 100% protection from the sun. Even if you have the right sunscreen and know how to use it, there are other ways to be sun-smart.
- Wear clothing. Clothes provide the best UV protection. Wide-brim hats, shorts, shirts, and long skirts are a good start. Some clothing even has SPF rated protection.
- Find shade (or make it). Staying out of direct sunlight and seeking shade under trees, umbrellas, or canopies will help protect your skin from UV exposure.
- Plan your day around the sun. If possible, plan outdoor activities before 10am or after 2pm. The sun’s harmful UV rays are strongest at midday.
- Wear sunglasses. Good sunglasses not only look great, but they protect your eyes from UV radiation that causes cataracts.
New product: EltaMD aerosol sunscreen
We’re excited to offer our patients a new sunscreen from EltaMD, just in time for the summer months: EltaMD UV Aero Broad-Spectrum SPF 45. This continuous spray sunscreen provides fast and convenient sun protection for all those hard-to-reach places. It’s also one of the only aerosol sunscreens on the market that contains zinc and titanium dioxide – the best and most effective protection against UVA and UVB rays.
We recommend using aerosol spray sunscreens as a complement to lotion sunscreen products. Melissa, our licensed esthetician, likes to lather on EltaMD UV Sport Broad-Spectrum SPF 50 first thing in the morning before a day outdoors, and then spray on EltaMD UV Aero Broad-Spectrum SPF 45 throughout the day as needed. We think this is a great way to incorporate aerosol sunscreens into your sun care.
We also offer many other brands of sunscreen for a variety of skin types and concerns. Contact our office for more information!

DermaSculpt: Pain-free fillers
We have now used the new DermaSculpt microcannula instead of needles for filler injections in almost all patients over the last six months, and Dr. Enzer is very impressed with the results. DermaSculpt has a blunt-tip instead of a sharp needle tip, which virtually eliminates any bruising after the procedure. Dr. Enzer also finds using DermaSculpt to be much safer, more precise, and exceptionally comfortable for the patient.
Dr. Enzer is one of the only physicians in the area that uses this revolutionary new technique. Call us today to book your appointment! 401-274-4464.
Thank you for reading our newsletter! Enjoy the summer months, and we’ll be back soon with more great updates and specials!
